Zim: Parliament submits Media Commission nominations

HARARE: The Parliamentary Standing Rules and Orders Committee (SROC) on Tuesday, 18 August 2009 said it had endorsed 12 persons whose names have been submitted to the president for appointment to the statutory Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) contrary to media reports that the process had been put on hold.

Addressing a news conference in Harare, clerk of parliament Austin Zvoma said SROC had also similarly submitted a six-person list for consideration to serve on the board of the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ). Zvoma confirmed that the process now awaits the consideration and the decision by the president.

    The 12 nominees are:

    • Mathew Takaona (outgoing president of the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists)
    • Chris Mhike (lawyer and journalist)
    • Godfrey Majonga (Danhiko Project deputy director)
    • Miriam Madziwa-Sibanda (freelance journalist)
    • Dr Lawton Hikwa (university lecturer)
    • Nqobile Nyathi (Media Studies lecturer)
    • Christopher Mutsvangwa (former Zimbabwean ambassador to China)
    • Dr Millicent Mombeshora (Reserve Bank Division chief)
    • Henry Muradzikwa (veteran journalist and former CEO of Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation)
    • Dr Rino Zhuwarara (an academic)
    • Reverend Useni Sibanda (Christian Alliance of Zimbabwe national director)
    • Wabata Munodawafa (veteran journalist)

The state-controlled national weekly The Sunday Mail had reported in its edition of 16 - 22 August 2009 that the process to nominate candidates to the ZMC, Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC), Anti- Corruption Committee (ACC) and Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), had been put on hold. The weekly reported that Zanu PF, MDC-M and MDC-T - the three parties that constitute Zimbabwe's inclusive government, “might now” have to forward nominees for appointments to the constitutional bodies in question on the basis of proportional representation.

In terms of the constitution, 12 nominees selected by SROC would be submitted to the president who would then appoint nine members including the chairperson to serve on the ZMC. The other list of six would be submitted to the president who will in turn appoint three members to serve on the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ).
