Afda is seeking applications for the role of senior lecturer in editing.
Afda is in search of a committed and dedicated senior lecturer with industry experience in fictional and factual film editing to lecture and support third-year undergraduate students. The position requires someone with drive and initiative who can motivate students and guide them into the world of post-production for the screen. The candidate should demonstrate a willingness to embrace Afda’s unique pedagogy, which forms the basis of interdisciplinary teaching at Afda. There is also a strong emphasis on cultural relevance within the teaching, aiming to help students identify and develop a distinctive African voice in their productions, contributing to nation-building and nurturing a sustainable local film and TV industry.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Acquire and maintain an up-to-date understanding of the BA/BCom/BCW programme through onboarding processes and staff training sessions.
- Lecture third-year editing students.
- Provide technical support to other lecturers in the department.
- Conduct research to advance skill sets and industry expectations through interdisciplinary sessions.
- Implement and review teaching methods for improvement.
- Liaise with industry professionals as needed.
- Deliver lectures, consultations, and ensure understanding of assignments, assessments, and deadlines.
- Ensure facilities, equipment, and resources are functional and maintained.
- Participate in quality assurance and quality enhancement practices.
- Participate in marketing activities and consultations with prospective students.
- Mentor students when required.
- Supervise post-production cycles, ensuring project readiness for Afda festivals.
- Host screening sessions and provide critical feedback.
- Attend Afda festivals and provide technical support.
- 5-10 years experience in the film and entertainment industry and lecturing at a tertiary level.
- Relevant honours degree or higher in film and/or media studies with specialisation in editing.
- Proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro CC, Da Vinci Resolve, Adobe Media Encoder, Avid MC, and Frame IO.
- Knowledge of various delivery formats for broadcasting, cinema, and online viewing.
- Ability to convey on-set protocols and etiquette.
- Experience in offline and online editing.
- Advanced knowledge of video compression requirements, post-production workflows, and quality checks.
- Advanced knowledge of story structure, film history, theory, and academic writing.
- Adaptability to Afda’s curriculum, syllabus, and methodologies.
- Cooperation with other teaching staff.
- Excellent time and deadline management skills.
- Proficiency in basic computer skills.
- Research and adaptability to new developments in technology.
- Proficiency in data management and backups.
- Comprehension of networking, servers, archiving, and troubleshooting.
- Proficiency in hardware, resources, and editing discipline requirements.

- Established work experience in tertiary education.
- Minimum qualification: BA honours in film, motion picture, or a related field.
- Established work experience in tertiary education or training and development.
- Preference is given to suitably qualified candidates from designated groups in line with the Employment Equity Act.
